1. Set Your Goals
Decide what you want your fair to accomplish. Here are some ideas:
- Raise awareness about local environmental issues.
- Celebrate student-led sustainability projects.
- Connect families with green resources.
- Promote eco-friendly habits at home and school.
Another great way to decide is to discuss the idea with students and brainstorm with them what they would like to accomplish.
2. Build a Planning Team
Recruit a mix of students, teachers, custodial staff, and parent volunteers to help with organizing and planning. Assign roles like:
- Logistics and setup
- Outreach and communications
- Activity coordination
- Waste management and sustainability
It is also very important to work with your school's administration to help ensure everything is approved and to help with unforeseen circumstances.
3. Choose a Date and Venue
When choosing a date and venue, make sure to take the following into consideration:
- Opt for a time that aligns with Earth Day (April), National Recycling Week (November), or your school's environmental calendar. This is where communication with your administration is key.
- Use outdoor spaces or well-ventilated areas to reduce energy use and allow for nature-based activities.
Another consideration is the time and length of your event. This will be important for communication with outside community partners.
4. Invite Community Partners
Utilize your school's PTA/PTO, and have them reach out to some of the following community partners:
- Local environmental nonprofits
- Parks and wildlife departments
- Farmers, composting services, and native plant nurseries
- Green businesses (solar, refill shops, eco-cleaners)
Ask them to host booths, lead demos, or donate supplies. This is also a great time to visit TakeCareOfTexas.org and order free resources such as activity books and stickers that can be handed out to attendees.
5. Design Student-Led Stations
Empower students to showcase their learning through student-led stations where they can explain their thinking. Some stations that can be created are:
Encourage cross-grade collaboration and TEKS-aligned presentations using resources on the Lesson Plans page and more on the Resources page.
6. Promote Sustainability
Lastly, you will want to promote the Green Fair within and beyond the community. Here are a few ideas on how to start marketing your event.
- Use digital flyers and social media instead of paper handouts
- Send an email to local radio and TV stations
- Have your PTA/PTO share flyers with their partners
- Collaborate with after school programs to share the event
