Bring appropriate gear, clothing, and supplies that enhance comfort. Repackage food to minimize waste and use a map and compass. A suitable tent, sleeping bag, and adequate food and water are a must. The goal of travel outdoors is to make your way through the natural areas while avoiding damage to the land, vegetation, or waterways. Travel damage occurs when surface plants or communities of organisms are walked over beyond recovery.

The waste humans create while enjoying outdoor spaces can have a major impact if not disposed of correctly. It’s important to predict the types of waste you will have and know the proper way to dispose of this waste in the area you are visiting. Look over your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled food. Be sure to pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter.
What about human waste, what to do when nature calls?
Deposit your solid human waste in catholes dug 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from water, camp, and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished.
No matter how big or small, items we find in nature have a role to play. Many natural objects, such as fallen logs or rocks, provide essential habitats for wildlife. Removing them can disrupt these fragile ecosystems, harming plants, animals, and microorganisms that rely on these resources. Some areas have significant cultural or historical artifacts. Disturbing these items can erase important connections to the past. By leaving what you find, you help protect natural environments, preserve biodiversity, and respect cultural heritage, ensuring that these areas remain intact for all to enjoy.
Minimizing campfire impact while camping is essential to protect natural environments and ensure a sustainable experience for future campers. Be sure the fire is at least 200 feet away from water surfaces to prevent contamination. Use locally sourced firewood to avoid introducing invasive species. Use existing fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. Keep those fires small and manageable and be sure to douse the fire with water until all embers are out. Respecting animals minimizes the risk of dangerous encounters. Many wild animals can become aggressive if they feel threatened or if their territory is being invaded. Disturbing animals can disrupt their natural behaviors, like, feeding, mating, and nesting, which can cause a ripple effect in the environment. Remember to store your food properly, as human food is unhealthy for wildlife. Do not feed animals. This damages their health, alters their behavior, and exposes them to predators and other dangers.
