During any special holiday, roses and flowers are a go-to gift that can lift the spirits and the aroma of any person or place. But is there more to a rose than the aroma? Well, yes, yes there is, in fact, there are several ways to extend the life of roses or any flowers. When repurposing flowers, it's important to think about the different parts of the plant. From petals to stems, there’s at least one way to reuse each part of the flower.
Make rose-petal sachets
Dry the petals and tuck them into small fabric bags. They’re great for drawers, gift baskets, or even small gifts for friends. Add other ingredients like cinnamon sticks, cloves, or orange peels to create a homemade potpourri.
Create artwork
Press different petals in a heavy book for a week, then use them for bookmarks, cards, or scrapbooking. You can also press the dried petals against the inside of a glass jar and pour wax in, creating a rose-petal candle.
Make useful products
Dry petals completely, grind them lightly, and mix them with sugar or salt for a fancy culinary touch. Soak some petals in vinegar as a starter for a nice smelling vinaigrette. But don’t stop in the kitchen, use some of those petals to create rose water. First, simply put the petals into a glass jar with water and seal tightly, and after about two weeks you will have rose water. You can also simmer the petals first, strain, and wait for the water to cool before putting it in a spray container.
Garden uses
Don’t just compost those flower stems but use them in practical ways to help support your garden. For instance, use thicker stems as natural plant stakes to support seedlings or smaller plants. You can also create a “brush pile” by bundling dried stems and placing them in a corner of the yard to give beneficial insects shelter.
Decor and keepsakes
Repurpose the stems to upgrade your house and decor. If the stems carry a bit of scent from the flowers, dry them and bundle them with twine. Place several around your home to add a pleasant scent. You can also use the more flexible stems to create small wreath bases by bending them into small circles, which can also double as an activity for kids.
Rose tea rinse
Steep leaves in hot water and use the cooled liquid as a gentle hair or linen rinse for fragrance. You can also put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it on couches and rugs to extend the smell.
Natural confetti
Don’t spend extra money on decorations for your next party, just use leaves. Especially during the fall months, gathering leaves and crumbling them up will make the best confetti and it’s all natural so no need to pick it up at the end of the party.
Finally, a great way to repurpose a rose is to plant and grow your own rose bush. When the petals are taken off, what is left is called the hip of the plant. When you see the hip, cut it off about an inch below the bottom of the hip and let it dry. Once it is dry, you can plant the hip with the stem facing up and the seeds in the soil. Within a few weeks, you will have your first seedlings.
By implementing some of these ways to extend the purpose of roses and other flowers is not only a great way to show your love and appreciation for a friend or relative, but it extends that love and appreciation to the environment.
