It is that time of year again: back to school! With millions of Texas students preparing to head back to the classroom, it’s an important time to keep the environment in mind. Don’t let your back- to -school shopping negatively impact the environment. As the new school year approaches, you can start the year “green” with simple changes.
As office supply stores, big box stores, and online retailers start to release their school supply and back-to-school clothes ads, remember to check which items are still usable from last year.
- Is last year’s backpack still in great shape? A good quality backpack will last even the most active kid a few years. Check with your school for backpack regulations. If the backpack, wardrobe, or other items are past their prime, consider donating them to a second-hand store.
- Even better, back-to-school is a great time to reassess items that have become clutter in your home. Redistribute items you no longer need and find items that your neighbors want to give away through a community trading post.
- Utilize last year's school supplies. Does your student have binders, erasers or crayons leftover from last year? Collect the unused school supplies from last year and stretch them out for this year’s needs or consider donating supplies.
