During Memorial Day weekend, all Texas shoppers will receive a break from state and local sales and use taxes on the purchase of certain energy- and water-efficient products.

Qualifying Products

ENERGY STAR

You can buy certain ENERGY STAR® energy-efficient products tax-free during the Texas Comptroller’s Texas ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can buy, and you can purchase these items for either personal or business purposes.

You can buy, rent, or lease the following ENERGY STAR-labeled items tax free:

  • air conditioners (priced at $6,000 or less)
  • refrigerators (priced at $2,000 or less)
  • ceiling fans
  • incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
  • clothes washers
  • dishwashers
  • dehumidifiers
  • programmable thermostats*

*The ENERGY STAR qualification for programmable thermostats was suspended on Dec. 31, 2009. The ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday exemption for programmable thermostats only applies to those with ENERGY STAR labels before the suspension.

Not all ENERGY STAR products qualify for the sales tax holiday. Some examples of non-qualifying products include water heaters, clothes dryers, freezers, stoves, attic fans, heat pumps, wine refrigerators, kegerators, and beverage chillers. Get more details on the Texas Comptroller’s website.

WaterSense Products

During the Texas Comptroller’s Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday, you can buy any product tax-free that displays a WaterSense label or logo. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can buy, and you can purchase these items for either personal or business purposes.

Water-Conserving Products

You can also buy certain water-conserving products tax-free May 25-27. Unlike WaterSense-labeled items, these items are only exempt when you buy them for use at your residential property**.

You can buy items tax free during the holiday that are used or planted for:

  • conserving or retaining groundwater;
  • recharging water tables; or
  • decreasing ambient air temperature, and so limiting water evaporation.

Examples of items that qualify for the exemption include:

  • a permeable ground cover surface that allows water to reach underground basins, aquifers or water collection points
  • a moisture control for a sprinkler or irrigation system
  • a rain barrel or an alternative rain and moisture collection system
  • mulch
  • a soaker or drip-irrigation hose
  • plants, trees and grasses
  • water-saving surfactants
  • soil and compost

Examples of items that do not qualify for the exemption include: sprinklers, awnings and other items used to create shade, and construction or building materials.
